Highlights of Peru (2013)
Itinerary:

  • Summary
Start this extraordinary vacation with a city tour of Lima, a place filled with contrasts left by the Incas and the “Spanish Conquistadores.” Enjoy a home-cooked Peruvian meal before continuing to the Sacred Valley, a typical Inca community. You will also explore the fortress of Ollantaytambo and tour one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, Machu Picchu.

  • DAY 1
    ARRIVE IN LIMA, PERU
Depending on your flight schedule, you may arrive in Lima today in the late evening. In this case, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in San Isidro. (Check-in time is 3 p.m.)

  • DAY 2
    LIMA FREE TIME & SIGHTSEEING
For guests arriving early this morning, you will be met and transferred to your hotel where rooms are ready for immediate check-in. At lunch time meet your Travel Director and head to Casa Diez Canseco, the private home of the Diez Canseco family. Enjoy a special Welcome Reception and a You’re Personally Invited home-cooked Peruvian lunch before a city tour with a Local Guide. Immerse yourself in the colonial splendor of Lima’s old section including Playa San Martin. Then see the Church of San Francisco. Later, your evening is free.

  • DAY 3
LIMA / CUSCO / SACRED VALLEY
Take a morning flight to Cusco where you will join a Local Guide and head into the Sacred Valley. Stop at Awanakancha, where you will see and pet llamas, alpacas and vicunas. Learn about Andean textiles and watch weavers at work. Enjoy a picnic boxed lunch before visiting the Pisac Market. Then travel to your hotel, a former 18th-century monastery in the heart of the Sacred Valley.

  • DAY 4
    SACRED VALLEY / MACHU PICCHU
Start the day with a visit to Ollantaytambo, an ancient Inca stronghold with a Local Guide. Then, board the Vistadome train for your journey to Machu Picchu. “The Lost City of the Incas” was built about 1450 and abandoned 100 years later. Upon arrival, take a short ride to the entrance and begin your exploration of this UNESCO World Heritage Site with a Local Guide.
NOTE: On the train to Machu Picchu, only hand luggage can be taken. Your main suitcase will be stored and returned to you in Cusco. Machu Picchu is built on a steep hill, with uneven pathways, rocky terrain and no handrails. You should be in good health and be able to walk without assistance.

  • DAY 5
    MACHU PICCHU / CUSCO
Return to Machu Picchu for last impressions of the magnificent ruins on your own. Travel by train and coach to Cusco. Along the way, stop at a local chicheria and sample chicha. Learn how this Peruvian corn beer is made by women only. Later, gather for a Highlight Dinner of local dishes and ancestral dance.

  • DAY 6
    CUSCO SIGHTSEEING & FREE TIME
Cusco is a city enveloped in myth and legend. Traces of its Incan and Spanish heritage can still be seen today. A Local Guide introduces you to Cusco’s most important landmarks, including the Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas and the Church of Santo Domingo, built atop the foundations of the Inca Temple of the Sun, or Kori Kancha. Just outside of town, visit the ruins of the fortress of Sacsayhuaman.

  • DAY 7
    CUSCO / LIMA
Fly back to Lima and enjoy a morning on your own. This afternoon meet a Local Expert, a curator from a Larco Museum, and learn about Ancient Peru societies. Then, gather for a Farewell Dinner in the museum’s garden restaurant. Depending on your flight schedule, guests may depart this evening.
NOTE: Depending on your flight schedule, you may be transferred to the airport late in the evening.
